Chapter Eight

Evan

I looked down at his hand in stunned surprise. I thought I’d called his bluff, but here he was calling mine right back. And this was Levi Adams, for God’s sake.

I actually wrote an article once in college on “What to Do When Faced with Your Heart’s Desire,” and I could still remember the steps.

Step one—visualize your end goal. Okay, that one was easy. He was standing in front of me.

Step two—take a calculated risk. I could check that one off my list too. I had no idea where this would lead, and I oddly didn’t care.

Step three—remember that failure is a definite option. I had that one well in hand. In fact, I was pretty sure I was hallucinating this whole thing and fully expected him not to go through with it.

And finally step four—Enthusiasm is everything. Check and double check. My enthusiasm was definitely firm, and it was currently making it hard for me to walk.

I slipped my hand into his. Still puffed up with bravado, I stood up beside him and said, “Okay, let’s go.” I don’t think my voice trembled all that much.

As always there was a lot of activity and I wondered if that was how the killer managed to get his victims out of these club parking lots without anyone noticing.

A few guys were drunk and leaning on their friends, and I saw some motion inside a few cars as we walked through the dark lot, even though it was still fairly early.

“Where’s your car?” I asked, because mine would be way too small.

“Over here,” he said, and pulled me toward the back row to his big SUV.

I started to slip into the back seat, but he shook his head and led me around to the cargo area. He had backed in at the end of a row, with nothing but woods behind it. He opened the cargo door and said, “Hop up and I’ll put down the back row of seats.”

Once the door opened, I sat on the back while he fixed the seats and then came back around to sit beside me. He had a quilt in the back that he’d spread out over the cargo area, which was now big enough to lie down on. We were enveloped in darkness, with only a faint glow from the lights of the club in front of us. A very slight breeze began to stir. The
